Jimmie Johnson Makes It a 2nd NEXTEL Cup Championship

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 18, 2007) Sunday night, November 18th 2007 Jimmie Johnson captured his second consecutive NASCAR NEXTEL Cup championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

"I cannot put into words what I am feeling right now," said Jimmie, after finishing seventh in Sunday's race where he led teammate Jeff Gordon who finished fourth. Beating Gordon by 77 points in the 2007 "Chase for the NEXTEL Cup."

"This trophy represents so much hard work by so many people and is the culmination of so many dreams of mine and others that's its almost impossible to talk about," said Johnson.

"There are so many people to thank. Rick Hendrick, Lowe's, my teammates -- the list is endless, but I am very appreciative of all that people have done for me in this sport and in life."

On Sunday, Jimmie started on the pole, led the first lap and never ventured outside the top 10. Afterward, he admitted he was points racing to preserve his 89-point lead.

"It's absolutely phenomenal," said crew chief Chad Knaus. "I'm very proud and very pleased of what we were able to accomplish. And the 24 and 48 shop this year, it's amazing what can happen when you have a group of 92 guys that are going out there and not so much racing against once another, but racing against the competition. That is really what this team did this year."

"Since I was a kid, I just wanted to race," Jimmie said. "I wanted to be the best at racing. I didn't know where it would lead me or what was in store for me or where it would go, but I loved to race.”

"And to be here racing on the main stage of NASCAR, and to have the success of the championships means the world to me. It is something I'm very, very proud of, and thankful of as well. And thankful for the relationships and friendships that I have.”

"I look forward to the future; a lot of good times ahead of us."

Jimmie Makes it Past Jeff for Another Win

Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon (current Nextel points leader) have dominated the 2007 Nextel season and definitely dominated in Martinsville this past weekend. Jimmie WON as Jeff Gordon finished third with teammate Kyle Busch finishing fourth. Definitely a dominating presence by the Hendrick Motorsports Team.
What a great win for Jimmie as he got his 3rd win in a row at Martinsville. This continues the Hendrick winning streak at Martinsville, winning eight of the last 10 races there.
Jimmie trails Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon by only 53 points in the Nextel Cup challenge. Jeff Gordon said, "We need to start calling him (Jimmie Johnson) Mr. Martinsville."
This Martinsville race was the first attended by team owner Rick Hendrick since the tragic plane crash in October, 2004 which claimed the life of Hendrick's brother, son, two nieces and several key employees. Jimmie said his win left Hendrick smiling but it wasn't the typical post-win celebration. "I wasn't really sure if he was going to be here today," said Johnson. Yet, Hendrick did attend and referred to his race teams as "family too" and that he wanted to be there for this win.
Jimmie heads for Atlanta this weekend and hopefully back to the winner's circle. Tune in this coming Sunday at 10:00 AM (EC) for the Pep Boys Auto 500 and to cheer Jimmie Johnson.

Defending champ keen on chasing his success ride!

It takes grit and determination to be a champion! Jimmie Johnson, the defending champion entering NASCAR’s Chase who is also the perennial championship contender of leading Chevrolet dealer Hendrick Automotive, does not lose hope even after a bad start in the championships. "I think everyone's strategy is to run top-five, top-10 and try to get maximum points. But we won't know the hole that we're in, or the advantage we may have, until we're probably seven or eight races in. I think you can formulate a strategy at that point. Until then, I think we're all just out collecting points," Johnson explained.
Last year, after several bad races, Johnson ran off consecutive finishes of second, first, second, second and second before collecting his first Cup title with a ninth-place finish at Homestead. For more details, visit -http://www.jimmiejohnsonchevrolet.com/
